Indonesian Historiography

Human communities become civilization as soon as they possess historiography, symbolizing time consciousness on the one hand and self-identity on the other. This also holds true as regards nationhood, with respect to national consciousness and to self-existence. Therefore, it is not exaggerated to say that national history is a symbol of national identity and that national history plays an important role in national education in particular and nation building in general. The historian should do his utmost when writing and teaching national history. On the one hand, objectivity in constructing national history must be observed, while on the other hand, historical criticism must be included.
